Waste Solidification and Neutralization

  • Calciment® is an economical solidification agent used to remove free liquids from waste prior to disposal in accordance with EPA regulations. Calciment® hydrates with free liquid and cements to a soil or rock-like solid determined by application rate. Large volume increases typically associated with absorbents (ie. sawdust) are reduced, saving disposal costs. Liquid release during transportation or compaction is eliminated .

  • Calciment® is commonly used to solidify waste contained in surface impoundments for closure. These wastes may be solidified and removed or left in place and capped. The solidified waste overl gain strength with time, supporting a cap, while limiting the mobility of waste constituents.

  • High volume wastes such as flue gas desulfurization (FGD) sludge, sewage sludge, and coal refuse waste can be solidified with Calciment® to improve their handling characteristics and stability. Certain wastes when solidified maybe beneficially reused in construction or agricultural applications.
  • Calciment® is an economical acid neutralization agent due to its high alkalinity. When waste acids are neutralized and mechanically dewatered Calciment® improves dewatering performance. Filter cakes typically contain higher solids (less water), separate easily from filter fabric, and solidify to improve handling. Simple laboratory tests can determine neutralization efficiency and solids generation for cost evaluation. Calciment® is typically screw fed from a storage silo directly to a continuously agitated neutralization tank and pumped to the dewatering process.

  • Calciment® is an ideal additive for neutralization and solidification of coal processing refuse. Coal refuse contains pyrites that when exposed to air generates acid commonly known as acid mine drainage. Calciment® not only neutralizes the acid generated but solidfies the unstable refuse called gob. Gob solidification reduces the potential for acid generation by limiting the infiltration of water which becomes acidic.
